The strategic collaboration will extend next-generation satellite internet to remote regions, accelerating digital transformation and economic growth across Africa.
Airtel Africa plc has announced a strategic agreement with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services to its markets across the continent. The partnership marks a significant step toward bridging Africa’s digital divide by delivering reliable and affordable connectivity to even the most remote communities.
Currently, Starlink has obtained operating licenses in 9 out of the 14 African countries where Airtel Africa operates. Licenses for the remaining five markets are under review. Through this collaboration, Airtel Africa aims to enhance its satellite connectivity portfolio and support a broad spectrum of users — from enterprises and government institutions to rural schools and health centers.
The agreement also opens up opportunities to expand rural mobile coverage via satellite-powered cellular backhaul solutions. As part of the alliance, both companies will explore ways for Starlink to leverage Airtel Africa’s ground infrastructure to boost network efficiency and regional presence.

SpaceX echoed this commitment to Africa’s digital future. “We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people in new and innovative ways,” said Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX. “Our collaboration with Airtel highlights our commitment to partnering with industry leaders to expand access and help unlock the continent’s vast digital potential.”
The agreement is expected to significantly bolster efforts to promote digital inclusion across sub-Saharan Africa, aligning with Airtel Africa’s broader mission to foster economic development through connectivity.
