Johnson Controls Acquires Nantum AI to Boost OpenBlue’s AI-Driven Energy Optimization

Michael Rudin

Johnson Controls has acquired Nantum AI, a New York-based specialist in AI-powered energy optimization, to strengthen its OpenBlue digital ecosystem and accelerate intelligent building operations.

The acquisition enhances Johnson Controls’ ability to deliver advanced, AI-driven energy efficiency, enabling customers to reduce energy consumption, emissions, and operational costs. Nantum AI’s proprietary algorithms introduce a new layer of autonomous control capabilities, particularly in optimizing HVAC systems across complex facilities.

“We’re entering the next phase of the industrial revolution, where digital intelligence is as critical as physical systems.” — Vijay Sankaran, Johnson Controls

With this integration, OpenBlue will expand beyond its existing water-side optimization strengths to include real-time, AI-driven control across both air- and water-side systems. The technology enables dynamic airflow adjustments based on occupancy and environmental conditions, improving efficiency without compromising comfort. The first combined solution is already in pilot stages.

Vijay Sankaran, Chief Digital and Information Officer at Johnson Controls, highlighted the strategic importance of the move, noting that AI is becoming central to industrial transformation and operational efficiency.

Nantum AI, owned by Prescriptive Holdings, has already demonstrated tangible impact, delivering over 10% energy savings for customers. Its algorithms leverage data from multiple sources, including weather patterns and utility trends, to provide more intelligent and automated building management.

“Nantum AI is already delivering more than 10% energy savings for customers.” — Michael Rudin, Prescriptive Holdings

Michael Rudin, board member of Prescriptive Holdings, emphasized the growing importance of AI in addressing rising energy demand and costs, adding that the collaboration will further enhance building performance and efficiency outcomes.

The acquisition also strengthens Johnson Controls’ portfolio of AI-powered building solutions, extending intelligent automation across air handling units, fans, and other circulation systems. By layering advanced analytics and machine learning over traditional building automation systems, the company aims to enable smarter, data-driven decision-making for operators.

As industries such as healthcare, data centers, and advanced manufacturing demand more resilient and energy-efficient infrastructure, Johnson Controls is positioning OpenBlue as a comprehensive platform for next-generation building optimization.

This move underscores the company’s continued focus on leveraging AI to drive sustainability, operational efficiency, and long-term value for customers worldwide.
