Vedanta Aluminium Accelerates Smart Manufacturing with AI, IIoT and Advanced Analytics

As India’s manufacturing sector advances toward Industry 4.0, companies are increasingly investing in artificial intelligence, industrial IoT, digital twins, and data analytics to improve operational efficiency, safety, and resilience. Reflecting this trend, Vedanta Aluminium has expanded the deployment of AI-driven technologies across its operations, strengthening real-time decision-making and enhancing productivity across its integrated manufacturing ecosystem.

The company’s digital transformation strategy spans logistics management, workforce safety, predictive maintenance, and asset monitoring. At BALCO in Korba, Vedanta has deployed four AI-enabled Control Towers that integrate GPS tracking, IoT-based monitoring, geofencing, video telematics, and real-time analytics. These systems provide enhanced visibility into coal transportation, finished goods movement, and ash management, enabling smarter logistics management and operational oversight.

A key focus area has also been workplace safety and workforce readiness. At the company’s Lanjigarh refinery, Vedanta has introduced ‘Aluminati’, an AI-powered robot designed to make safety training more interactive through real-time guidance and multilingual support. The site has also implemented a Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver Simulator, allowing operators to practice emergency response and hazard management in a risk-free environment.

Commenting on the initiative, Rajesh Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said that technology is becoming central to modern industrial operations, adding that the company’s objective is not merely to adopt digital tools but to apply them to solve practical operational challenges, improve decision-making, and enhance productivity.

At its Jharsuguda smelter, Vedanta is leveraging AI, machine learning, digital twins, and asset-health analytics to shift from traditional periodic inspections to continuous monitoring and predictive maintenance. This approach helps improve equipment reliability, optimize resource utilization, and reduce operational risks.

From an industry standpoint, Vedanta’s investments highlight how digital technologies are evolving from experimental initiatives into core manufacturing capabilities. By embedding intelligence across operations, the company is building a more connected, data-driven, and resilient manufacturing environment while supporting India’s ambition to develop globally competitive industrial infrastructure.
