Every software expert and business leader I speak with conveys the importance of delivering meaningful software projects that accelerates the pace of innovation. Today SUSE announces the availability of SUSE Cloud Application Platform 2.0 to support those efforts. Providing full application lifecycle automation, the platform enables enterprises to shrink release cycles from months to minutes, which in turn enables them to continuously improve customer experiences and dramatically increase the agility of their business.
A new Kubernetes Operator in this release enables easier deployment and management of the Cloud Foundry-based platform on Kubernetes infrastructure. This 2.0 release is also simpler to install, operate and maintain on Kubernetes platforms anywhere – on premises and in public clouds. It also opens an accelerated and pragmatic path for existing Cloud Foundry users to transition to a modern, Kubernetes-based architecture.
Enhancements to the platform’s web-based management console help administrators manage applications more easily and securely. A rich new workload view provides deeper insight into applications and their deployment settings. Improved security is also featured in this release with Helm 3, which reduces threat surface by eliminating Tiller, the server-side component used in Helm 2, and defers access control directly to Kubernetes.
SUSE has long led open source community efforts to bring the world’s premier high productivity developer experience, embodied in Cloud Foundry, to users of today’s industry-standard container management platform, Kubernetes. SUSE already delivers a containerized implementation of the Cloud Foundry Application Runtime that runs in Kubernetes, unified management of Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes deployments through a single console, supported operation on any certified Kubernetes platform, and a tech preview of Kubernetes-native scheduling.
SUSE Cloud Application Platform 2.0 builds on and advances those efforts, incorporating several upstream technologies recently contributed by SUSE to the Cloud Foundry Community. These include KubeCF, a containerized version of the Cloud Foundry Application Runtime designed to run on Kubernetes, and project Quarks, a Kubernetes operator for automating deployment and management of Cloud Foundry on Kubernetes.
By building from the upstream KubeCF project and incorporating new Kubernetes features regularly and incrementally, SUSE enables current Cloud Foundry users to take advantage of new Kubernetes capabilities now and speed their transition to a Kubernetes architecture. You can learn more about how SUSE is delivering Cloud Foundry in SUSE Cloud Application Platform at the Cloud Foundry Summit today and tomorrow.
