Microsoft’s investment aligns with the urgent need for innovation-led skilling, says Women in Cloud’s Chaitra Vedullapalli
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s announcement to invest $17.5 billion in India to strengthen AI and cloud infrastructure has drawn strong support from global tech leaders. Among them, Chaitra Vedullapalli, Co-Founder and President of Women in Cloud, said the commitment marks a pivotal moment in shaping India’s AI-first future.
Vedullapalli noted that India’s ambition to become a $7 trillion economy depends on its ability to cultivate an innovation-ready workforce capable of securing, scaling, and leading AI-driven transformation. She emphasized that while enterprises and governments have invested heavily in digital badges, certifications, and AI skilling programs over the past decade, the next leap must focus on innovation capability rather than tool usage alone.
“India now needs an innovation-ready workforce that can build real digital outcomes, not just use AI tools.”

“Microsoft’s commitment is an endeavour towards creating professionals who are prepared to design new products, solve real-life challenges, and drive meaningful change using AI,” she said. She also highlighted the limitations of traditional skilling frameworks, which focus on tool proficiency but often fall short in nurturing innovation-led thinking.
To address this gap, Women in Cloud has launched Main Hoon Saksham, a large-scale initiative designed to empower one million Indians with AI, cloud, and cybersecurity skills. The program includes the activation of 100 cyber resilience centres of experience in universities and aims to inspire 100 million citizens toward digital inclusion. According to Vedullapalli, initiatives like these, combined with investments from global technology leaders, can accelerate India’s transformation into a digitally empowered, innovation-centric economy.
By championing inclusive skilling, public–private collaboration, and innovation-first learning models, Women in Cloud aims to ensure that India’s AI growth story ultimately translates into widespread social and economic progress.
