In a landmark move that signals a major boost to Africa’s energy independence, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has partnered with Honeywell to double its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. This transformation will position Dangote as the world’s largest petroleum refinery, strengthening regional fuel production while significantly reducing reliance on imports.

Aliko Dangote emphasized that the partnership is not just a business expansion, but a step toward bolstering Nigeria’s strategic energy autonomy. With Honeywell’s advanced process technologies, catalysts, and equipment, the mammoth refinery in Lekki, Nigeria, will be capable of processing a wider variety of crude efficiently and sustainably.

“Through the use of Honeywell’s proven, advanced technologies, we can set new production standards for the industry while contributing to Nigeria’s energy independence and economic growth.”

With nearly a decade-long association, Honeywell’s technologies have remained pivotal in streamlining operations at the Lekki refinery. The expansion will optimize existing infrastructure, accelerate production timelines, and support Africa’s escalating fuel and petrochemical demands.

Rajesh Gattupalli from Honeywell UOP reinforced the company’s commitment to innovation and energy resilience, highlighting that the collaboration exemplifies how technology partnerships can transform national industrial capabilities.

“Honeywell is committed to delivering groundbreaking technologies that empower customers, drive operational excellence, and support regional energy security efforts.”

As part of the deal, Dangote will also deploy Honeywell’s Oleflex technology to significantly increase propylene production — a critical input for plastics and packaging — pushing total polypropylene output to 2.4 million metric tons annually.

This development marks a defining moment in Africa’s industrial self-reliance story, showcasing how technology alliances can reshape the global energy landscape.
