Ericsson and Saudi Railway Company Partner to Drive 5G-Powered Rail Transformation

Ericsson

“5G is set to redefine how railways operate — from passenger experience to real-time operational control.”

In a move that signals a major leap in Saudi Arabia’s transportation modernization journey, Ericsson and the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the transformative potential of 5G in rail operations.

The partnership aims to enhance rail communication systems, improve passenger connectivity, and boost operational efficiency in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. Through this collaboration, the Kingdom’s railway sector is poised to experience a new era of digital transformation powered by ultra-reliable 5G technology.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will bring its global expertise in 5G and Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems (FRMCS) to design and deploy cutting-edge rail connectivity solutions. The collaboration will include testing 5G use cases, conducting real-world trials, and training SAR teams to build capabilities in next-generation communication systems.

As part of the initiative, Ericsson and SAR plan to establish an innovation and test lab dedicated to 5G railway applications. This will allow for the validation of advanced use cases such as train control, real-time video streaming, IoT connectivity, and staff communications. A trial deployment on one of SAR’s rail lines will evaluate performance and integration in live environments.

“5G is more than faster connectivity — it’s the foundation for intelligent, automated, and safe transport systems,” said an Ericsson spokesperson, emphasizing the company’s commitment to enabling mission-critical rail communications.

The partnership reinforces Ericsson’s role in supporting the Kingdom’s vision for smart mobility and digital infrastructure leadership, while SAR continues to push boundaries in rail modernization.

Together, Ericsson and SAR are not only enhancing passenger experiences but also paving the way for connected, efficient, and future-ready railways — setting new global benchmarks in the transportation industry.
