Strategic Acquisition Strengthens Tenable’s AI Risk Management Capabilities
Tenable has announced its intent to acquire Apex Security, a San Francisco-based startup pioneering cybersecurity for AI-driven attack surfaces. The deal marks a bold move to strengthen Tenable’s leadership in proactive risk mitigation as enterprises increasingly embrace artificial intelligence.
“AI dramatically expands the attack surface, introducing fast-moving risks most organizations aren’t prepared for.”
— Steve Vintz, Co-CEO and CFO, Tenable
Founded in 2023, Apex has quickly earned recognition among CISOs and top-tier investors like Sam Altman (OpenAI), Clem Delangue (Hugging Face), Sequoia Capital, and Index Ventures. The company specializes in securing high-risk AI environments—covering shadow AI apps, synthetic identities, AI-generated code, and ungoverned cloud services.
This acquisition complements Tenable’s 2024 launch of Tenable AI Aware, which currently enables thousands of organizations to detect and assess AI usage across their networks. The addition of Apex will empower enterprises to enforce AI usage policies, control exposures, and embed security into both the AI they consume and develop.
“As organizations move quickly to adopt AI, many realize this is the time to get ahead of the risk — before large-scale attacks materialize.”
— Mark Thurmond, Co-CEO, Tenable
“Apex delivers the visibility, context, and control security teams need to reduce AI-generated exposure proactively,” said Thurmond. “It will be a powerful addition to the Tenable One platform.”
Matan Derman, CEO and Co-founder of Apex, noted, “The AI attack surface is intertwined with everything else organizations are already securing. Treating it as part of exposure management is the most strategic approach.”
The deal is expected to close later this quarter. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
