SAP Moves From AI Assistants to the Autonomous Enterprise

Christian Klein, CEO, SAP SE

SAP is positioning the next phase of enterprise AI around the Autonomous Enterprise, moving beyond AI-generated answers toward systems that can understand business context, make recommendations and execute operational work inside established workflows.

At SAP Connect, the company demonstrated how Joule Work and Joule Assistants are being used across finance, procurement, supply chain, HR and customer experience. Customers including Novartis, Morgan Foods, Nestlé and PwC shared early examples of applying AI to sourcing, collections, billing and supply-chain decisions.

Joule Work is now beginning its broader customer rollout as an AI interface that enables employees to interact with SAP and third-party data using natural language. SAP says Joule Work is already live with 110,000 employees internally, where it has seen 20% productivity gains across finance, HR and procurement.

“This is a breakthrough moment for business AI. The Autonomous Enterprise has arrived. With Joule and SAP Autonomous Suite, built on SAP Business AI Platform, we’re helping organizations connect intelligence across every function to deliver trusted business outcomes.” — Christian Klein, CEO, SAP SE

The more significant shift comes with Joule Assistants, which can execute operational tasks within business workflows using established data, authorisations and audit trails. SAP is also allowing customers to control the level of autonomy, while Agent2Agent connectivity enables Joule to work with third-party AI agents.

SAP is backing this model with its Business AI Platform, Business Data Cloud and Knowledge Graph, which maps more than seven million data fields to provide business context. Joule Studio also allows users and developers to build agents and skills using more than 70 AI models.

The company is extending the autonomous model beyond applications, announcing SAP Pay for embedded payments and new partnerships with Moody’s and ORO Labs.

The broader message is clear: SAP wants enterprise AI to evolve from a productivity layer into an operational layer where AI does not simply advise employees, but increasingly helps execute the work itself, under enterprise governance and human control.
